Brekkie
I met with a former colleague for breakfast this morning, which meant that I left the house far earlier than I usually do. On a typical morning, Shawn joins us for breakfast/coffee making, and he starts his day early as he works remotely on East coast time. I usually drop off the baby at daycare while on my way to work myself. Today Shawn cleared his morning schedule so that he can take Mimi to school. I prepped much of the morning last night so that Shawn could easily feed Mimi and take her to daycare.
Jaki was somewhat of a mentor to me when I worked at the venture firm. She was amazing then, but I like her even better now that we are not colleagues and can speak like friends. We spent our time just catching up and talking about lives and our families. I missed her smile and positive energy! I arrived before her, so here’s my photo for the day. I was very tempted to try this Thai Tea Toast (I was tempted by a lot of things, actually) but I got eggs and fruit instead.
My work day was more productive than usual even though I started later and had to work from an uncomfortable conference room desk. Our office is on the 2nd day of its makeover. Yesterday, the Facilities team repainted our walls (now our accent wall is an earthy blue instead of a rusty red) and today the carpets were shampooed. Tomorrow, the new furniture will be moved into their new configuration and then we can start moving our belongings back in on Friday. I am looking forward to decorating! I'm excited to choose new wall art, new plants, and a new seating area.
I went to Pilates in the afternoon. I thought that today was the last day of class but I was delighted to learn that there are still two more sessions! I really didn’t like Pilates for the longest time- I’d always felt that I didn't get anything out of it and there were more efficient ways to exercise in a lesser amount of time. This feeling was confirmed on the first day of class at the beginning of the summer. But on the second day, I spoke with my instructor after class to ask some questions so that I can understand it better and be open to setting a different expectation. “Am I doing it wrong?” “You’re thinking about it wrong,” was the answer that I got. In this extended postpartum phase on my life, I’m really looking for targeted core strengthening exercises and posture correction. That’s what Pilates is. My instructor advised that I not use my Apple Watch, and instead just focus on lengthening my spine, stabilizing my core, and practicing getting up from the floor without my hands. Finally, a workout that’s not measured in caloric burn, but rather just time to get to know my own muscles again. Besides, I get enough calorie burn during my home workouts. Pilates is just quiet time for me and my body. I really enjoy it now!
