Family Ties

Still feeling slightly tired so had a quiet day at home getting to know T's family better.  His maternal grandmother's family comes from Arranmore, a small Island off the coast of Donegal, which we plan to visit later in the year.

It was interesting making the actual connections between distant cousin's I've met and T's direct family as well as comparing the life of those who left the island and those that stayed.  In doing so I also came across some tragic stories including the Owencarrow Viaduct Crash (two of the victims were the sister and husband of T's great great grandmother) and the Arranmore Disaster, a heart-breaking tragedy which claimed the lives of 19 out 20 making the short crossing from Burghhead to the Arranmore, including T's great great grandmother's brother and six of his eight children.  It is hard to imagine the lasting impact that would have had the widow/mother and surviving children.
