Surprise...ish!!
10 weeks we've kept this secret and today, the catering guy, who never speaks to anyone, decided to wish MrK Happy Retirement!! He then went on to say he thought there was some sort of do organised with other groundsmen from around thr circuit!! MrK came home flustered and hoped the club weren't organising anything for this wknd as he was worried about the pitch for Sunday and hated being made a big fuss of. I said they wouldn't do anything on Sunday because its Robin Hobbs memorial and the guy probably hears snippets of things and adds 2+2 and makes 6. I think I reassured him and we went off for brunch together at fête while FK had a little lay-in. We then together headed off to the DeHavilland Museum at Shenley. However, we got to the Brentwood roundabout for M25 and there we sat for over half an hour. Change of plan we went to the Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch. It was pleasant to be underground in the cool. Very interesting, but sombre place. Thank God it never had to be used.
Stopped for an ice-cream and then MrK decided to detour off to pop in on his Mum and Dad. Poor Terri was just about to get ready to come to the bbq! Fraught hour or so with timings and keeping him in the house, persuading him to shower so we could go for a drink after taking FK.
We were going to walk FK through the park for his bbq, but he said he just wanted to speak with Jamie about work Sunday....and there was everyone waiting. A select few and the young Head Groundsmen from Somerset and Glamorgan that used to work here with him. They sat him down and played 15mins of video messages from players, ex-players, officials, Groundsmen from around the country, some of his current staff and Fk and I. They then presented him with a cap, usually saved for players, embriodered and framed. He chatted with everyone before a bbq, then a present from his current staff of a pizza oven. His face was a picture! He's been after one for years! They'd also done a shirt which everyone there signed. He was over the moon and said it was everything he thought he didn't want! A lovely memory.
