Mill Street Community Cafe…
This may not seem an obvious treasure but to me it has been invaluable. I’ve had loads of gall stones for many years but in the past couple of years they have been seriously playing up and I totally lost my appetite. I was referred to the surgeons to have my gall bladder removed but because I’d lost 5 stone in weight this was turned down because they said I needed tests to rule out anything more serious. That was eventually ruled out but for some reason the surgical referral got overlooked and it wasn’t until last November that it was resurrected.
I still wasn’t eating and still losing weight but I wanted to make a serious effort to start eating again and the Community Cafe helped tremendously. They let me pick and choose items from the menu; gave me tiny portions to temp me and held back extra portions of dishes that took my fancy. I don’t think I’ve put weight back on yet but I am eating almost normal sized meals with varied ingredients and by late afternoon I am always hungry; a sensation I’d forgotten existed!
I now have a date for my surgery; 3 weeks today. I will be so pleased once that pesky little gall bladder has gone.
And I have thanked everyone at the cafe for their kindness in helping me regain my appetite!
So in my book this fits the theme of a treasure or treasures for all the volunteers there.
