Chedworth Roman Villa
Firstly, many thanks to everyone for the lovely comments on yesterday's news of my still life award. It was an interesting challenge to get a misty shot that also looked attractive and atmospheric and many shots were taken to get that one. I feel there will be more experiments with the smoke machine!
We had a lovely morning out at the Roman Villa less than 30 minutes from where we live. It dates back to the fourth century but was uncovered in 1864 and taken over by the National Trust about a hundred years ago. The mosaics are stunning to see but I've chosen to show a view of the hypocaust system (the floor would have rested on these short pillars and hot air would have circulated under the floor from a furnace). In the distance you can see the stunning view that the villa has across the countryside. We've made a mental note to return in the autumn to see how the views look then. In extras you can see a beautiful tree on the right that is an American buckeye grafted on a Chestnut tree. On the right is the museum that was built in Victorian times. Behind them is a visitor centre where several preserved room mosaics can be seen.
