Reflection
After visiting dad early this morning, I travelled westwards to rejoin my itinerary. I seemed to be ahead of any real bank holiday congestion, so made faster progress than I had anticipated. In consequence I decided on a detour along the way, visiting Winchester Cathedral. A candle was lit.
It’s a beautiful building, with a lot of interesting things to see. The image is of the crypt. It floods every year, and because of all the rain is still drying out this year, so there is no access beyond the point where I am standing. Anthony Gormley donated this statue (cast in lead from his own body) to the cathedral on condition it be located in the crypt. In winter the statue stands in water, and through capillary action water is fed up into the statue’s cupped hands. The idea seems to be that as well as his body reflecting in the surrounding pool of water, he is staring at the reflection of his soul in his cupped hands.
