Capt. Taylor of the SS Montrose
SS Montrose was a steam ship that was built in 1897 and wrecked in 1914. If you recognise the name it may be because it was the ship that Dr Crippen and his lover Ethel Le Neve tried to escape from justice in Britain after he had murdered his wife. The ship was one of the first to be fitted with a radio telegraph by Marconi. Whilst the ship was still in range of the UK, the telegraph was used to alert the authorities by the Captain who had recognised the disguised Crippen and his lover disguised as a boy. He and Le Neve were subsequently arrested when the Montrose arrived in Quebec. The case is celebrated as the first use of wireless telegraphy to assist in justice.
The blip shows part of an antique sea chest that we use as a coffee table. It bears the name Captain Taylor of the SS Montrose. Unfortunately, Taylor was not the Captain who assisted the arrest of Dr Crippen but must have been captain at a less famous period in the ship’s 17 year history. I thought with its interesting association to the famous story, a close up of part of the sea chest a suitable subject for today’s Tiny Tuesday challenge with the theme of “wood”.
