Guide or pattern?

I've become exceptionally frustrated with the pattern that I've been using to make the lacy cardigan. I'm so nearly finished but the instructions just don't work. The maths is completely wrong and it has obviously not been checked by an editor because it is incomprehensible. I probably can work it out for myself but I bought a pattern so I had something to follow. I got an email back from the designer stating that the instructions were meant to be used as a guide........

Went over to Slough in the morning rain to look at a new electric car. Test drive was completed and decisions were made. We think we are doing the right thing but there was a lot of cognitive dissonance going on all day. We still quite like the little Corsa but I think it is time to dip our toes in new technology.
