Himalayan honeysuckle
This afternoon we drove to my Mother 's house for a brief stay there. It has been very hot and humid (up to 29C ) today. I found her Leycesteria formosa (also known as Himalayan honeysuckle and by lots of other common names) looking very lush, now with stunning pendulous racemes of purple berries in red-purple bracts. I try to grow this plant in my garden but it is not happy. It obviously prefers the moist London clay soil rather than the dry, free draining chalk down land, which I try to cultivate.
