A chain of events
This community doesn't just save our lives; it can change them. Some of you mentioned liking Wicked Little Letters, so a few weeks ago I watched it with Bella (and then again with Sue) and liked the solidarity of the women, though for me Eileen Atkins stole the show. I read up on Atkins and was amazed by her productivity—she has not only acted on stage, TV, and film, she co-created Upstairs, Downstairs and later wrote the screenplay for Mrs. Dalloway, a movie I found fascinating, though it didn’t have the success I thought it deserved. I bought Atkins’ recent autobiography and ordered her 2-woman play, Vita and Virginia, from our library. Today Sue and I held our own private reading of the play and basked in it (I read Vita, she Virginia), then watched about 15 minutes of the dreadful movie based on the play (don’t even get me started).
To cleanse our spirits after the execrable movie, we went out to Pier Park. It has been misting rain for the past day or so, and it was delicious to be in damp and richly perfumed woods under enormous Douglas Firs. When I sneaked this photo, Sue was distracted by a woodpecker.
On reflection I have to agree with Freespiral about Wicked Little Letters : quite right, as she says, “a pretty sad story about an oppressed and desperate woman and I reckon in reality, the woman played by Jesse Buckley would have been hell to live with.” Fair enough, though in the end, I enjoyed some laughs with Bella, got interested in Eileen Atkins, and had a delightful Labor Day reading with Sue, so it’s all good.
