Uyuni Salt

This rather humble piece of rock crystal is a precious souvenir of one of the most amazing journeys we have ever undertaken - a ‘road trip’ across the Bolivian Antiplano to Uyuni.

Road trip is something of a misnomer as we travelled along what were at best tracks, and at times even these tracks were nonexistent, but our driver Cecilia seemed to find his way even in the darkness. For the most part, we had this sublime scenery to ourselves, passing surreal rock formations and flamingo-fringed lakes. We spent a sleepless night in an isolated hotel at 4,860 metres, breathlessness making sleep impossible - but it was all worth it.

Our destination was Uyuni - and the salt pan was in flood giving rise to the most amazing reflections. We absolutely loved it, and have so many photographs to commemorate our time there. Just as we were leaving, Julio, our guide, pressed this salt crystal into my hand  - to remember this beautiful place. Of course, we could never forget it, but it remains a prized possession reminding us not only of the place but of the two people who took us safely across this forbidding but beautiful area. I’ve added a collage from the journey in extras.
