Sarlat

We went into Sarlat this morning to see the market.  It’s a lovely town with a picturesque modern centre.  I have strong memories of being in Sarlat twice before, once with a friend, Jo whilst staying with my parents when we were in our twenties.  And once, also with Jo in our late teens when we were hitching around France, Spain and Italy with two boys.  The boys were fairly useless and we had the cash and the savvy. In addition I spoke fluent French having been working here as an au pair for the previous six months.   Fed up with them sponging off us and doing very little we left them with the bags and went into the market.  We picked up some food to eat later but also a kilo of strawberries and fromage frais which we gorged on out of sight.  Unfortunately we rounded a corner still scoffing and ran straight into them.

I was remembering this and sent Jo a text about it.   She correctly identified it was fromage frais we were eating which at that stage she’d never heard of,  ‘magically delicious’ she remembers now.  I ate a fromage frais ice cream from an extraordinary ice cream shop in celebration.
The market was teaming with tourists and the stalls were mainly things for us to take home, saucisson, foie gras, huile de noix etc.  We had a fine lunch in a welcoming bistro where they were very welcoming to the children so it was great fun.

Stopped off at the supermarket to buy a few things for dinner.  V cooked lamb and ratatouille.
