Lascaux
Having had such a success with the Grotte de Cougnac V and I decided to go over to see the mother ship of Lascaux. Famously it is now shown as a facsimile as when they opened it up in 1940 they did so much damage in such a short time that it has been closed and monitored ever since. The facsimile of course lacked the immediacy of the paintings in Cougnac but the detail was astonishing and the guide very French. Although speaking good English we learned more about the philosophy of being human rather than much detail about the painting. To be fair there seems a lot they don’t know.
The youngsters went off to ride on a steam train and I spent the morning dealing with the fall out from the announcement about the closing of our company by our parent company. It’s quite a blow with the big show launching but I have lots of irons in the fire so should be able to carry things through. Inevitably the announcement contained the very thing we had agreed they would leave out and so a lot of to and fros on the phone.
Came back from Lascaux to meet up with the others at tea time. More emails to do.
