The neighbours

These are Irish Dexters, a breed of small, black cattle noted for their beef, which has a unique flavour, much prized by top chefs and gastronomes. They are resident in the field next to our house.
We try not to think about their destiny, for we and the neighbours treat the small herd as our pets. The reason they are examining me so closely is that they are hoping for some bread, and a couple have already butted me with their noses to remind me!
There are eleven yearlings this year, here for the summer. They are a hardy breed and could happily over-winter outdoors - but they would need a permanent water supply - which is not available. The water tanks that provide for their needs would freeze up in winter, and so they are moved out in late autumn.
These guys are intelligent, feisty, inquisitive and behave like naughty children, always exploring ways of getting out and causing havoc on the street, for example if the battery powering the electric fence happens to run out of juice.
