Our Green Man

This Green Man came from Roslyn Chapel near Edinburgh, a place made famous in the novel "The da Vinci Code". I like his benign face.
Green Men carvings, also known as 'foliate heads', are to be found in Gothic churches and cathedrals all over Europe. They often appear to be made of leaves whilst appearing human, and are taken by some to be an ancient symbol of nature and fertility.
To others they symbolise wildness, of the un-named spirit which lives in us all and reflects the wildness at the heart of nature.
The Green Man as also been adopted as an unofficial icon for the environmental movement, pointing to the way in which we connect and interact with the natural world around us.
All this makes for fascinating study, reaching back into medieval times right across the European continent, mysticism and magic.
So...this is our first Green Man icon. Others to follow at later dates......
