Len looking at The Obelisk

It doesn't look such a long way up that slope does it, but I assure you I felt it by the time I trudged up to where you can see Len in his red jumper.  A long, long way. Having seen the summit of The Obelisk on Friday from Shepshed and having seen a photo of it allegedly overlooking a field of barley on Facebook, I wanted to go and see it for myself.

I'm not doing that painful walk again. Time to get Cecily out and shunt her across Garendon Park. The path from Shepshed joins the path at Coe Lane in Loughborough, so technically it's feasible.

Why go again? Reader, the one photo I took was blurred! And I can tell you that that photo I saw on Facebook had been doctored. Someone had replaced the Temple of Venus with The Obelisk overlooking a field of barley.

But it was such a lovely afternoon after a night of heavy rain.

The Obelisk does look out over fields that have been mown. It's a gorgeous landscape. As the lady who helped me up the last ten metres of the path said, You don't realise how large the park is. I wonder whether the agriculture will be retained once Persimmon and Davis have finished building their housing estate.

I wonder what town dignitaries will think if they visit during the Heritage Weekend next week. The site is still something of a mess.
