Cappricio - Rex Whistler's mural at Plas Newydd
We were anticipating very poor weather according to the forecast so opted for a visit to the NT property Plas Newydd which is beautifully situated overlooking the Menai Strait.
We had not been in the house before so that was our first port of call. We weren't too impressed to be honest, and for a property that had been in NT hands since 1976 the information was surprisingly scant. Usually there are plenty of info boards or volunteers to ask, but not here.
But we were very impressed by the huge 17.5m long mural by Rex Whistler that is situated downstairs in the dining room.
It was painted over 2 years, finishing in 1938 and was designed as an imaginary view from the windows of Plas Newydd House. The Tromp-l'oeil or 'trick of the eye' deployed was fabulous with several examples in the piece. Being so long it was very difficult to photograph so I just opted for one corner.
Apparently this was one of Whistler's great masterpieces.
After lunch the heavens opened before giving way to quite a bright, if breezy afternoon.
