Santo Domingo de Silos
We drove out of Burgos today to the tiny town, and Benedictine monastery, of Santo Domingo de Silos. In my blip you can see a corner of the cloister that dates from about 1080. It’s completely carved with wonderful capitals and narrative panels. I particularly liked this St Thomas putting his fingers in Christ’s wound, with Christ’s arm stuck out at an improbable angle :-). There are two glimpses of the little town.
After lunch of lamb roasted in a wood oven in a village inn, we went on to the remnants of an amazing 7th (!) century Visigothic church now absolutely in the middle of nowhere. We drove up into the hills then through mile upon mile of sunflower fields waiting to be harvested. The church incorporates Roman stones and pillars, so it must have been important once. One of the carvings inside may be the earliest representation of Christ in Spain. I only took pictures in the dark interior with my “proper” camer, so nothing to pist here.
