Elie chain walk

This section of the Fife coast path around the headland at Elie has a dramatic formation of lava cliffs and inlets, full of caves and raised beaches. To make it traversable, the fisherman put chains up some of the trickier sections, which have since been replaced with large stainless steel chains for public use. 8 sections with chiselled footholds make it an interesting and in places, quite airy scramble.

The basalt rock is composed of layers of lava flows, some with horizons of bombs and one cliff section of dramatic hexagonal columns. The whole scene is somewhat reminiscent of the Hobbits journey into Mordor.
