We saw this beetle on our walk, it's a Devil's Coach Horse and is quite common apparently. They are voracious predators, emerging after dark to prey on other invertebrates using their pincer-like jaws to crush them. Fast moving, they prefer to run along the ground rather than fly. The beetle curls up it's abdomen like the tail of a scorpion when threatened and emit a foul smelling substance from their abdomens. They can also deliver a painful bite to us. Females lay their eggs in soil, the predatory larvae hatch and spend the winter as pupae emerging the following spring as adults. (The Wildlife Trusts).
Another very pleasant, sunny and warm day, for our walk this morning and a couple of hours gardening this afternoon. There were a few spots of rain a little while ago but it didn't amount to anything, pity it didn't rain overnight.
