Diary of an Edinburgher

A circuitous route to the Circular Tower

A very sluggish start today. I think the old engine is running out of steam. Eventually we got organised to go in for a wander of the quaint little streets in the town centre. We thought we might try to find the Round Tower. Again. Having attempted and given up several times before.

We wandered round, possibly on a large circuitous route, looked in a few rather stylish but very expensive shops. The streets are so small and higgledy piggledy and the free city maps are not detailed enough. We were about to give up again, and sat down to have our picnic lunch and watch the passing array of humanity. We turned round, and there it was! Very very large. Kind of unmissable.

And what a marvellous structure it is too. It is the world's oldest observatory, built in 1637. It has a 210 metre long ramp, which spirals up to the top. Apparently King Christian wanted to be able to drive up in his carriage. And why not.

It was great fun. I had an excuse to keep stopping and sitting on the convenient windows to take photos. Kids were loving it- some were running up and down, red faced with exertion and will definitely sleep tonight. I had to pump up the ISO, so there is a bit of noise.

There was also an interesting art exhibition, and a wonderful view over the city from the top. Well worth searching for all week!

On the way into town, our bus driver was eating an apple. The other day, at the terminus, our driver was doing step-ups on a bench, and eating carrot sticks. We have seen so many babies in prams with a piece of fruit, and families having healthy picnics. It shouldn't be worthy of comment, but it is. They are a healthy, happy bunch, these Danes.
