There Must Be Magic

Silver Queen from Himmel's

My husband and I had not had any sweet corn yet this summer. He is from Cambria County, and the only type of sweet corn he likes is Himmel's. Sure, we've tried other sweet corn that's closer to where we live. We've mostly regretted it.

So on Friday, when we had our mega-adventure travel day (fancy a trip to Janesville, anyone? HA HA HA HA HA!*), one of our stops was Altoona, to pick up sweet corn from Himmel's, from their truck parked next to the Holiday Bowl by Eat 'n Park.

Every day around 11 a.m., Himmel's posts on Facebook what locations they will be at, what type of corn they have, and what the cost is. On this day, it was silver queen, for $8 for a baker's dozen. Silver queen just happens to be my husband's favorite.

Above is a photo of several ears of sweet corn that we enjoyed on this day. It was tender and tasty and sweet. We sliced a nice tomato to go with it, and so our meal included two of the fresh delights I remember from summertime in childhood: sweet corn with butter and salt, and sliced red tomatoes. Oh my!

The song can only be this one: Abba, with Dancing Queen.

*Here is a quick addendum to my story about how we got lost on the backroads between Prince Galltizin and Tyrone Friday night, when they closed the usual road we travel on. One of my friends, Karen, who lives in that area, saw the story that I wrote about it. She said, "Oh, I live right near there. You should have come to MY house. What road were you on?" Well now, Karen, that's the problem. I wish I could help you out there. But we were on roads that had no number and no name, following signs that directed us to towns that may or may not exist! Towns that don't show up on any map, neither printed nor online! HA HA HA HA HA!!!!
