Larger and paler than the common footballer, Helophilus trivittatus, the large tiger hoverfly is a migrant and new to me.

Many of the ivy blooms are open and by now I should be able to hear the ivy bush buzzing as I approach it. Not the case this year, I'm finding subjects to photograph but having to search quite hard for them. The cold wet weather we have had this summer has taken its toll. I'm not surprised that the Big Butterfly Count is the lowest ever.
