Last visit before it closes ...
... for a refurbishment.
This is the Pipe Factory next to the Barras in the Calton. We visited as part of Glasgow's Doors Open Days.
It was designed in 1877 by Airdrie architect M. Forsyth as a clay smoking pipe factory for William White and Sons. It operated as such until 1955 and at it's peak employed over 500 people.
The building closes today in order that it can be refurbished to include a lift to all floors, rewiring, replumbing and stabilising the brick fabric of the building. £4M has been raises for this. Due to reopen in 2026 it will enable local young peope to access the fields of the arts, architecture and design.
It was great to see this grade B listed building before this all takes place and to listen to what the hopes are for it's future..
Afterwards we had a wander through the adjoining Barras Market (see extra)
