Abbots wood

Still pleasantly warm.  We decided to go for a walk in Abbots wood, near Furness Abbey.

At one time it was the grounds of  huge mansion built around 1850  belonging to one of the founders of our town and our first mayor, Sir James Ramsden
But after he died it remained empty for many years .
It was used during the 2nd world war for Civil defence  but then remained empty and derelict till it was demolished in 1961

The underground nuclear bunker was built in the grounds and had things gone differently in the Cold war in 1961 it would have been used as a control centre in the event of a nuclear attack.

Now only a few blocks of sandstone mark the site and it is a peaceful place to walk along the woodland paths.
