The bridge is up

Years ago this was a common occurrence but it's rare to see the bridge up now. 

Today it was opened to let through boats for the Round Walney race. Sad to see only 4  boats were taking part. 

The Old bridge isn't used to opening. It took a while. The warning lights flashed. The barriers went down and the traffic stopped. Then thete was along delay before with a lot of groaning the bridge parted and opened. 


Half a century ago, when I was at school.a commone excuse for being late was " Sorry I'm late, the bridge was up" ....often used by people who didn't even live on Walney Island! Lol
