Correction Wynd

Mrs CBL and I met our daughter in Aberdeen for lunch today at our favourite Italian restaurant.  We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Afterwards the ladies went shopping and I went in search of a blip as per usual.  I had noticed that there had been some short, sharp rain showers when we were in the restaurant but when we left the sun was shining.  Thankfully it continued to do so for the rest of the afternoon.

I wandered through the nearby churchyard of St Nicholas Kirk which is the dead centre of Aberdeen and exited into Correction Wynd.

The street is so called because a House of Correction had been built there in 1636 at the request of King Charles I.  It was an institution where offenders of the church were sent to cleanse their souls along with delinquents, vagabonds, prostitutes and, would you believe, gossips too!

The aim was to ensure that the ne’er-do-wells would reform their morals and ways. They were employed in the manufacturing of broad cloths, kerseys (rough wools) and other coarse cloths into clothes for the poor of the city.

I was standing outside the institution when I took this photograph of the wynd.  Nowadays the street is home to a Michelin Restaurant, how its fortunes have changed over the years.

Enjoy your weekend lots!
