Between fen and mountains

All ten

We have had visiting ringers this weekend so we were able to ring ten bells this morning. Most of the visiting band came from Somerset and they rang quarter peals on Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon. The local band attempted to ring a quarter peal after the service. This was to commemorate the wedding of the son of two of our ringers last week, also to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the installation of the bells and to remember the late wife of our tower captain whose birthday would have been today. Unfortunately, the attempt was unsuccessful and failed very near the end. Two of the six ringers were not confident in the method and kept making mistakes which made it very difficult for the conductor. He had to keep shouting corrections which made it very difficult for everyone and in the end it became too ragged for him to correct so he had to call a halt. Afterwards we had a meal with the visiting chaplain who is also a ringer and the other church warden and her husband. It was a lovely meal. I had escalivada followed by squid followed by a dish similar to bread and butter pudding with chantilly and ice cream.
