Life is a Challenge!

'TWAS ON A MONDAY MORNING...

...the gasman came to call!  Mr. HCB loved listening to Flanders and Swann, a popular British comedy act in the 1950s and 60s - and of course, when I started going out with him, I either had to get to love them too, or go into another room when he played their songs!

This one might be known by many of you, entitled “The Gasman Cometh” - about typical British tradesmen - and I must admit when we listened to the song again this morning, it took us back a few years and made us both laugh and of course, it does all “make work for the working man to do!”

Indeed, the gasmen “did cometh” this Monday morning and our neighbours and us were out in force to see and hear exactly what they planned to do.  The two fellas we spoke to said they had been on the road since 2.30 this morning, having come down from the North East - and you could tell by their accent.  They said that they would make sure that we could get off our driveways, which is a relief, and would endeavour to “keep it clean” and will do their best, despite the weather - but with all the rain we have been having, this could be a muddy few days.

As well as the Gasman song, we both liked the Hippopotamus Song, but hope we won’t be singing “Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud...” too much ourselves this week!

But hey ho - the job has to be done - and hopefully by the end of the week, weather permitting, we will have new gas pipes fitted and only the detritus will be left over the road, on the grass verge, to be collected next week sometime.

Both our neighbour, Lynn and I told them that if they wanted hot drinks, they should just knock our doors and drinks and biscuits would appear!  They thanked us and said they would remember that.

We have found, as no doubt many of you have, that if you are kind to workmen, they are kind to you - so hopefully, we will all be happy at the end of the week.

Hope you all have a great week, whatever you are doing - we are now off to the Community Fridge where there is a MacMillan Cake Sale - just hope there is some fruit cake for Mr. HCB, as it’s his favourite.
