Kayaking with seals and bald eagles!
Monday 23 September
An amazing day today, kayaking with a guide round some of the San Juan islands. R and I had a double kayak, and they put Jen Laura and Liam in a triple kayak which surprised us. It was a rather dull cloudy start, but after a while the clouds began to break up, leading to some intermittent sunshine. Our guide was very informative, talking about the islands, the nature and wildlife. We had been paddling for a while, when he said to us that we were making good time, so we would head for a tiny island off to our left. As we approached, we could see masses of birds perched on the top - mainly cormorants and gulls, and then as we continued round to the back of the island, we came across quite a number of Harbor Seals, some hauled out on the rocks, and others in the water. It was wonderful being so close to them. Later, we stopped for our picnic lunch on Burrows Island, top right in my collage, with the lighthouse. As we continued, Jen spotted the eagle in the distance - you might say she has “eagle” eye sight! As you can see he had just caught his lunch, and I don’t think he was too pleased about us hanging around taking photos! The weather continued to clear as we returned to the dock, where we came across another three seals sunning themselves on the dock!
