The Great Rift
With a new moon and a clear sky we went to Devoke Water for an attempt at the Milky Way.
I've tried this once last year, with limited success. It was a bit easier this year as I was able to find camera controls in the dark, sort out my focus easier and use my phone app to control my camera. However I still managed to allow my camera to roll off my pack into a bog while I was trying to get my tripod sorted!
I took multiple shots experimenting with f/2.0, f/1.4 and ISO 1600/3200
In post I compared 6 focus stacked images in Sequator with noise reduction of a single image in Lightroom. Both did a good job on the noise but the output from sequator gave much more detail which I guess is expected, 6 images vs 1. I also found editing the sequator .tif output file gave a more natural result than editing the lightroom .dng
Next time I will try more stacked images, lighting up a foreground in some way and also try to find a situation where I am pointing up at the foreground with the Milky Way behind.
The best result seemed to be at f/2 ISO3200 with a 15sec exposure
(exif mangled by sequator?)
