I went out after breakfast for a walk around Shalesmoor, an area between our neighbourhood and the city centre. It was once crammed full of small cutlery and tool-making works, surrounded by rows of back-to-back housing. Housing conditions were bad, and these streets were demolished after WW2. Many of the factory buildings were still in use however, though decline set in from the early 1980s onwards,
Now, blocks of student flats are slowly beginning to dwarf the remaining industrial buildings, around the edges of the neighhourhood. However, plans for more demolition and/or redevelopment seem to have stalled over the last few years, allowing trees and shrubs to encroach more and more. I'm keen to record how it looks now, anticipating that there will eventually be more redevelopment.
As I was coming to the end of my walk, a man stopped me to ask whether I had much information about some of the early 19th century buildings. It turned out that he's been researching his family history, and has found records of ancestors who lived in the back-to-backs in the 1830s. We had a good chat, and agreed to exchange information by email, as we may have complementary sources.
A good walk, though I soon realised that the deep shadows from the morning sun were a problem (as you can see in the extras). I'll need to go back at a different time of day, probably late afternoon.
