Breaking through

How suddenly things can change. For over a week we enjoyed beautiful autumnal weather (apart from one damp day) while on holiday. Then today, our first full day at home again, the weather is like winter with rain all day and strong winds. However, Bertie still needed his walks and it was while we were out in the afternoon that I spotted this young fungus pushing its way through the bark of a birch tree stump. It made me think of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I will watch its progress.
