Pair of Speckled Woods

I was amazed to find these two speckled wood butterflies, Pararge aegeria, in my Fife garden mid-afternoon today.

I had been out earlier to see what some flowering ivy was attracting.  It was busy with hoverflies and a single red admiral butterfly and I thought one of those would be my blip.

However, I found these two speckled woods more significant.  Earlier this summer, I had spotted a couple of fly-throughs by this species but today these two were really hanging out around the base of my Pittosporum, much like the whites usually do.  I believe the one on the left with the damaged forewings, is a (gravid) female, while the other is a male.  They tolerated each other's presence.
