Out first to the City gallery; the Adam Bruce Thompson exhibition closes today (6 October). In extra

The Old Dean Bridge oil on canvas, c.1932 Adam Bruce Thomson OBE, RSA, RSW (1885-1976) Dean Village is a historic settlement to the west of Edinburgh's city centre, which was once dominated by numerous grain mills verging the Water of Leith. By the early twentieth century, local industry had declined and many buildings had fallen into disrepair. The area was nonetheless popular with artists. Here, Thomson offers a striking interpretation that hints at Cubist influences. Despite the crumbling architecture, the deserted scene feels distinctly modern with its geometric forms and strong tonal contrasts. On loan from a private collection.

Lots of slight pictures collected together, some excellent things worth seeing. Mild calm dry day. Found some good cards.

Out in the afternoon to Inverleith; two swans, the usual assortment of ducks, coots, moorhens and gulls. No tufted ducks.  Back by Dobbies, looking for pansies and fertiliser; they were almost our of stock on the second thing, though expecting more before they shut up shop.  Raeburn Street was busy, we diverted up to Ann Street and back through the New Town.
