Constitution Square
San Sebastián is the most amazing place - stylish and vibrant. Constitution Square, or Consti, as it is known by the Donosti inhabitants, is the heart of the Old Town and the place where fiestas and celebrations take place. It was constructed in the year 1817 by architect Ugartemendia, one of the most involved in the rebuilding of San Sebastian after the devastating 1813 fire.
The numbers above the windows still mark the bullring boxes that the houses formerly used to be and from which you could watch the bullfight. After the construction of a new and larger bullfighting arena in the city, the Constitution Square was not used as a bullring anymore; however, the numbers remain on each window so as not to forget part of its history.
Had the most amazing pinxtos in crowded bars, watched some great street acts and then down by the harbour spectated on competition by young people to see how far they could walk along a pole over the water before they fell in. Nothing would have tempted me into the water there but kids and adults were flinging themselves with gay abandon. Didn't manage to see half the city but we'll definitely be back!
