WHAT RACE PHOTOGS DO TO AMUSE THEMSELVES

I shoot race cars for a living.  Sometimes, "things happen" at a race track which requires some cleanup time.  It's during such times that race shooters have to amuse themselves with whatever they may find.
~
This Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) presented himself, along with a mouthful of Hickory Nuts (Carya ovata) on top of a Jersey Barrier, a large mass of concrete separating the racing surface from the surrounding terrain.  He looked at me for several minutes...I understood so I grabbed a quick photo.
~
After the shot, he was satisfied with his portrait so he leapt off the barrier and into the trees to the left of the track (see Extras).  He nibbled on the nut for a bit while basking in the sunshine and then promptly buried the remains as squirrels are wont to do.
~
BIOLOGY LESSON:  Do squirrels really remember where they bury their nuts?  They tend to bury them in regular locations so by trial and error, or smell, they may find many of them.  While it's almost certain that squirrels indeed forget some subset of the nuts that they bury over a nut-burying season, it's not clear whether these are truly forgotten or simply abandoned in favour of food that is easier to recover.
~
Hopefully, the remains will germinate in the Spring and add a new tree to the surroundings.  Thus endeth the biology lesson for the day.
