Living my dream

Bean and the Onions...

... sounds like a band from the 60s.

She found the most sheltered patch of sun when we got home from G's at lunchtime.

The onions are starting to sprout in storage, so I have sorted them, and will cook these ones as priority. I also took a handful to G who is always happy to accept surplus veg.

Cream of onion soup. Cheese and onion flan. And a pork and tarragon pie - which is stuffed full of onions, as well as the meat and herbs.

I mentioned yesterday that I felt like a boiled owl.

As animal idioms go it’s a peculiar one. It was frequently used in my childhood, when both Dad and I spent the early mornings in stunned, just-woken-up silence while my wide-awake mother tried to galvanise us to go to work and school respectively.

According to the internet boiled owls appear to have originated from all-night (night owl) radio presenters of the early 20th Century in the USA. There is even an Order of Boiled Owls.

Blipper esiuol mentioned yesterday that she found a source which suggested that boiled owls are intoxicated people. And there are a couple of taverns/pubs called the Boiled Owl. Who knows?

We also referenced drowned rats, which are more well-known.

But less common is looking like a sick camel. That is used to describe somebody looking out of sorts, either physically or emotionally. Peeliewallie would come close.

Are there more animal idioms out there?
