Symi Town, Symi.

The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of wonder.
Ralph W. Sockman
Another day of sightseeing with K1, this time with an excursion. Back to Rhodes Town first for a few hours more wandering around the old town, visiting parts we’d missed yesterday, and time for a leisurely light breakfast at a pavement café before it started to get busy.
We then headed to the nearby port for the fast ferry across to Symi for a look around. First impression was so impressive with beautiful pastel coloured neoclassical buildings lining the quayside and climbing up the hillside. In a way it reminded me of Portmeirion for some reason, although the styles are different. Had a wander around Symi Town and then a relaxing, enjoyable meal at one of the many quayside restaurants to soak up some of the atmosphere of the place. It really felt like an authentic village/port even though it was obviously catering for us tourists, much more real than some of the other places I’ve visited where character and authenticity have been sacrificed on the tourist altar. Not surprisingly this, for me, was something of a high point of the holiday so far. We stopped off for an ice-cream on the way back to the ferry and enjoyed a rather special sunset on our return to Rhodes. Message to say my lift would be leaving early in the morning for their flight so I had some packing to do to be ready to leave promptly.
