Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth
The end of a lovely day on the Isle of Wight. So many blips to choose from today. Beach, sea, the Wight Line trains, sunsets, people but this is the one I like best taken at the end of the day from the Gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour as again the light fades and the buildings, ships and tower are lit up in readiness for the coming night.
Caught the ferry across Portmouth Harbour from Gosport, then walked to the Wightlink Catarmaran departure point through Portsmouth Harbour Station and crossed the Solent on a beautiful summer's day. Bit like going on holiday. At Ryde caught the Island Line train to Shanklin where we spent a couple of hours with lunch, walk along the beach, ice creams and a look around the town.
The Island Line is all that remains of Wight's rail network - an 81/2 mile stump linking Ryde to Shanklin, run using ex London Underground stock. An interesting little journey. Had to forego a trip on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - but our hosts were not interested despite it being a Victorian themed weekend.
From Shanklin we took the train to Sandown and a long walk took us to the beach for a cup of tea. Back to the station, just catching the train back to Ryde where we ate in a Weatherspoons at the top of Union Street. I say top as I was pushing the outlaw in her wheelchair all day and the pub was at the top of a steep hill. Enjoyed the couple of pints there I can tell you, especially the Cairngorm Brewery's Citrus, Wheat and Elderflower brew.
Then a great trip back across the Solent watching the sun set in a clouldless sky until we arrived back in Portsmouth and was able to take this shot waiting to get our life back to where we were staying.
