Common Enchantments

Stairs

I was drinking my morning coffee before we left the mountain house this morning when I noticed the light coming in the window on the stairs going up to the bedroom. Blip done.

We drove home by way of Asheville, North Carolina as we found out that one of our favorite restaurants was open for business and the farmers market beside it was open. We decided to support them with our dollars as the area was devastated by Hurricane Helene. The restaurant and market had no damage but they did not have good water. The city water system has been down for over two weeks. There were portable restrooms in the parking lot. The menu was very limited from their normal but the food was good. My nephew and family had never been there and they enjoyed the restaurant and the market. Many of the retail spaces at the market were closed but I was able to get my favorite pickles and cheese as well as fresh produce. We talked to a vendor who was from the town of Marshall where the flooding destroyed half of the Main Street including the post office. His little girl was with him as the schools have been closed for two weeks. He said they are hoping to get to school by the middle of the week or next week for sure but he also said many roads are still impassable and dangerous.
His home was okay and he had power and water but many of his neighbors did not.

I still cry alot about these beloved mountains and the mountain people who have lost so much. They don’t mention the deaths anymore but this will be shockingly high when it comes out.

Keep Western NC in your hearts as they need all the love and hope we can send.
