Whitby Shrine

The fence below the Abbey cliffs has become a shrine to the deceased. Until relatively recently in this country it was highly unusual to see this kind of display of public grief on display but seems to have become much more common since the death of Princess Diana

We spent a couple of early afternoon hours in Whitby today and the sun finally came out as we were sitting eating lunch. Whitby was busy and we decided not to spend too much time in the town - just long enough to find a quiet place to sit and enjoy the sea, have some lunch and pick up a few items of shopping. On the way home we stopped off at Scaling Dam (something we've never done before) and spent an hour watching the birds from the hide. Mainly the highly excitable Grey Lag Geese who got involved in a `ruck' but also a Curlew, two Dunlins, Lapwings and Wagtails (not sure whether they were Grey or Yellow). It was good to see so many Lapwings resting on the waters edge. When I was a child there was a huge flock which gathered in the fields near my school village - but they are no longer a common sight! We've bought fish for tea so we'll be eating in tonight :)
