East Riddlesden Hall again!

My plan today after all the hype about it turning warm, was to plant some allium bulbs in the garden. What came with the warmer temperature was fog and rain!
So I suggested to Chris that we went back to East Riddlesden Hall for a coffee this morning and then a look around the house which was missed yesterday.
It’s some time since we were there before and in the past I accompanied both children in costume when they were at primary school.

Most of the interiors are based in an inventory from 1662, but there is one room set up as it would have been in the 1700’s and a more recent display is of a bedroom as it would have been using artefacts from the last family who lived there. The Bailey family were tenant farmers from the late 19th century for 48 years until 1935.

My strongest memory from my earliest visit is of the Blackwork embroidery. The bedspread here in the Grand chamber is done in what is described as ‘Spanish Blackwork’. (The canopy and drapes look like crewel work.)

There was a display with samples of Blackwork on show and the information suggested the art of Blackwork was brought by the maids of Catherine of Aragon when she came to marry Henry VIII.
I’ve always admired it and have done a few examples of it myself.

The weather hasn’t lifted all day so it was a good place to spend the morning. Hope fully those bulbs will get planted sometime!
