Norwich

I went into Norwich today, and here are some photos from around my wander. After tea and cake at the refectory in the cathedral, I walked through Tombland to the Norwich Museum. The portrait photo is of the Norwich Canary mascot in the museum, canaries evidently have been associated with Norwich for over 400 years, bought over by Flemish weavers. The top two square photos are of a house built by Augustine Steward, a Norwich bigwig in the 1500’s. At the bottom you have the pretty Elm Hill and another photo from the museum.

Another warm day so it was lovely to sit outside to have my lunch, reading the paper. I went to a musical at the Theatre Royal in the afternoon, which was excellent and got a standing ovation. It was based on a side story of 9/11 which I’d not heard about. When US airspace was closed, 38 planes were forced to land at Gander in Newfoundland (historically it had been used for refuelling international flights) and nearly 7,000 passengers and crew were looked after by the people in the town of only 9,000 for several days - this tells their story from the perspective of a small number of passengers, crew and townsfolk, the confusion, fear, mistrust and very generous support.
