Today's the day

Glen Nant

Today's the day . . . . . . . . . to stay local

The weather was a bit gloomy today - but undeterred, we went to the nearby Glen Nant National Nature Reserve and managed a walk there before the rain came on in earnest.

It's such a beautiful place - a remnant of one of our finest native oakwoods.  It was actually one of the woods that Will sampled for pollen analysis, fifty or so years ago, when he was a research student.  So it held lots of memories for him.  The Autumn colours were in evidence everywhere - as were the fungi (see extra).

After that we went to find out about the Cruachan Power Station - a most remarkable construction built underground in the Hollow Mountain of Ben Cruachan. It was opened in 1965 by Queen Elizabeth and today it can generate up to 440,000 kW of electricity.  It is one of only four pumped storage power stations in Britain . . . . .
