Dayshift No.1

Haven't taken any pictures because busy busy, however I did forward a picture to bestie that I had taken for her at almost gone midnight the night before but hadn't sent it then because of the late hour.

This evening before tottering off to the land of nod, we had a natter on the videocall about it. In the Lakes last month we both noticed that the entrances to the long disused Hindcaster Tunnel had been painted white back in the day and wondered why. I had speculated that it may have been for Fly-Boats that ran express services of sorts even overnight, but the full answer came reading on my kindle!

It seems in WW2 that German Bombers were managing to follow glimpses of lights along waterways much in the same way as they did with car headlights along roadways and so with water being so mirror-like, boats were required to navigate without lights. Lock Beams were painted black with just the outer tips painted white (as they still are today) to reduce their visibility at night - the white tips being just enough to aid the boaters in the dark and tunnel entrances were painted with a white outline also for the same reason.

A random question answered out of the blue, topped off equally randomly with a picture of one of the Sound Mirrors we didn't manage to get to on our adventures in April, this one sitting above the Royal Military Canal in Kent.

We also discussed Fidra, her awesome St1300 motorcycle who is having a few issues. She will sort it :-)
