An old school- Chantry House

This morning was very dull and quite chilly when I went for a chiropodist appointment and then the library.

After lunch the sun had come out so I decided to head out to research a ‘walk’ I am writing up for the Teddington Society. I did a couple during lockdown around other parts of Teddington and had always intended to do a third and the route was in my head! So I’ve decided I will now sort it out properly and do a bit more research into some of the significant buildings en route.

This building is now a private house in Fairfax Road but was originally built in 1884 as a Roman Catholic School. It was run by sisters of the Charity of St Paul. There was a school on the ground floor and a chapel above.
There was already a C of E St Marks School very nearby built in 1875. Later in 1929  a new building was built for St Marks school in St Marks Road and it became a secondary school later until a larger Teddington secondary school was built in 1963. In 1963 the Diocese of Westminster bought the site and the Sacred Heart primary school has been there ever since.
St Marks C of E church was built next to the school in 1939.
I always wondered why there was a C of E church right next door to the Catholic primary school!

The R.C Sacred Heart Church was built nearby in 1893 on Kingston Road. It continued to use the old school, Chantry House as a church hall until 2006 when it was sold and is now a very attractive private house.
