Glenfinnan

Today's the day . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . for mass tourism

We thought we'd visit Glenfinnan today, famous as being the place where the Standard was raised by the Scottish clans for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion began.

It's a while since we've been there but it always was a magical and atmospheric place - specially if you stopped to think how it would have felt to have been there on 19th August 1745.  Hopes were high and change was in the air.

Now, of course, Glenfinnan is famous for something completely different.  It's where the masses go to photograph the steam train coming over the railway viaduct - as featured in the Harry Potter films.  And the masses were there in force today!  The carpark was full when we arrived, so we had to come back later.

The National Trust for Scotland do their best to try and cater for everyone's needs but it must be quite a job.  I just hope that the Harry Potter fans also get to know a bit of Scottish history at the same time . . . . . . . . . . !
