Old Harry Rocks
A different view of Old Harry Rocks at dawn from the ferry to Cherbourg from Poole. There used to be a Mrs Harry rock but unfortunately she was eroded. These great pillars of chalk cliffs lie at the south end of Studland Bay and the line of chalk was once connected with the Needles, Isle of Wight. They form part of the Jurassic Coast.
Arriving in Normandy we made our way to Arromanches stopping at St-Mere-Eglise. (Extra: the church with an effigy of the American paratrooper, John Steele, hitched up with his parachute on the tower early on the morning of the D Day landings - he was captured by the Germans but escaped).
We also visited La Pointe du Hoc where there had been a German underground network of tunnels and bunkers with machine guns on the top of 100 ft cliffs. The American troops scaled the heights, losing men on the way, and assaulted the German position which was located between Utah and Omaha Beaches.
We arrived in Arromanches by tea-time.
