Montenegro
Today we headed off, early as usual, for a packed day. We headed along the coast to take the short (free) ferry across a narrow point of the beautiful Bay of Kotor, to Tivot then drove slightly around the coast to Porto Montenegro where we had an extremely nice coffee and fresh croissant. Breakfast wasn't great this morning so this was a real treat. We sat and looked around the bay, not 100m away from a $200million super yacht, Olivia O - she is available for charter apparently. We declined.
From there we took a boat around another section of the Bay of Kotor to a small island with a very pretty church on it called Our Lady of the Rocks. The pirate(Johnny Depp of course) accompanied us. My main blip is this part of the day.
The first extra is a couple more shots of this trip, I can't find any information on the stone table but will keep looking. The island the church is built on is man made, the story being that two brothers were at sea, one had an accident but was miraculously saved. As they were sailing back they saw an icon of Mary in a cleft of some rocks, they took the icon home and vowed to build a church there as a thanksgiving for the saved life. From then on they and other sailors would drop a rock in the ocean on their way back to shore as a thanksgiving and gradually the stones accumulated and an island was formed. The church was built and became a place special to sailors. Local people left gratitude gifts for the safe return of family members. There are silver plaques all around the church as a result. There are also paintings and icons made by local people.
The boat took us around the bay to Kotor where we visited the old walled town, much damaged and restored after earthquake damage. My coffee cup and the old entrance doorway under the gate of the city are from Kotor.
From Kotor we headed to another walled town, Budva, where the ballerina statue is . It's beautifully set against a background of the sea.
I'm playing catch up today, it's been very busy, apologies I may add to this later when I have a breathing space.
